Initial Post Instructions
Consider our exploration of factors that lead us to help, as well as those that direct us to helping certain people over others that we discussed this past week. To prepare for this discussion, find a spot in a public place that has lots of people. For example, a bench at a park, the food court at your local mall, etc. Make sure you select somewhere busy where you are likely to see numerous encounters among strangers. Now, for 30-60 minutes, observe carefully the interactions you see around you, making note of any helping/positive behaviors (holding the door open for someone, letting someone go ahead in line, helping someone pick up something they dropped, waving or smiling in greeting, etc.). When you see someone engaging in helping behavior, note as many details as you can about all of those involved in the exchange. Age, race, attractiveness, clothing, type of help, nature of the exchange, etc. Take some time to reflect on patterns you noted in your observations.
Now, respond to the following in your discussion:
What patterns did you find, if any, in your observations?
Did they fit with the theory and research we discussed this week?
If so, how so? If not, why not?
Remember to be specific when making connections between your observations and relevant theory and research.

Hello Class
In todayâs discussion, our exploration of factors that lead us to help, as well as those that direct us to helping certain people over others that we discussed this past week. According to Kassin (2016) states, âAltruism that involves an individual helping another (despite some immediate risk or cost) and becoming more likely to receive help from the other in returnâ,(P.414). During last week, I decided to look around and observe for 30-60 minutes while standing around the Magnolia garden at Waco, TX. Iâve noticed the southern hospitality right away with people greeting one another, holding doors or initiating open conversations. I even noticed positive behavior of parents interacting with other parents and their kids were playing on the field and laughing. Because of the beautiful weather, the vibe overall was peaceful, calm, and relaxing. Each store I encountered, the associates were welcoming and would start a conversation while assisting. Strangers opening doors, assisting with taking pictures, helping with directions, and helping the elderly. As a reference from the article, âDoing Things for Othersâ states, âWhen we’re kind to people we know it strengthens our connections with them and provides a source of support. Research shows that we may benefit from giving support more than those receiving it – and we’re also more likely get support in return when we need itâ,(Para.3). Therefore, the sense of reciprocation and possible gratification that goes along with it, has given me that âwarmthâ to interact and help others as well.
