Informal Assessment for Use with a Child of 2 years of age This assignment is an individual piece of work. It is worth 100% of the overall Practice Education 1 Module grade. The date for submission of the assignment is March 25th at 12.00. Failure to do so will result in you redoing this assignment during the autumn sitting. As a working clinician there will be many times when using a formal standardized assessment is not suitable. This could be as a result of the age of the child, their attention levels, their reluctance to do table top activities etc. In these situations you will need to use toys, pictures and objects from your clinic in order to establish approximately the communication skills of the client presenting and decide what further courses of action(s) are required. This type of assessment is not intended to diagnose children but merely to guide the clinician in relation to their forming hypotheses. Using an informal assessment is a good way to gain the trust of a young child who has never been in a clinic before as it is usually play based. You will need to be very familiar with the ages and stages for this age group as you will be gathering information through the play based assessment. You should include references to these developmental norms. There will be two parts to this assignment. The paperwork and the box of materials (for 2022 provide a list of toys) which will accompany the paperwork. The paperwork is worth 80% and the list of toys/materials 20%. The paperwork which should not exceed 2,000 words should outline for the examiner how you intend to elicit information and in turn make a judgement relating to the childâs level of functioning (approximately): ⢠Receptive Language ⢠Expressive Language (Vocabulary, Syntax and Morphology) ⢠Speech sounds appropriate for the age of the child ⢠Pragmatics ⢠Play ⢠Attention Each section should be supported with reference to the literature. You may find it is helpful to divide your page and on one side outline what you would plan to do including your steps up and down and on the other side reference the literature in relation to norms and ages and stages. Other students like to write it in a paragraph format targeting each of the above sections. This is a personal preference. Thisg document will support you as future clinicians when seeing clients. Information gathered can be used in note writing and report writing as it is objective. For 2022 please just provide a list of items you would include. Can you provide links to toys or pictures of materials that are suitable for using. Please consider the age of the child from a safety perspective. Consider the attention span. Be mindful of using toys/materials that can be wiped down between uses to ensure good infection control is adhered to. This assignment will be graded using the marking criteria which can be found in the Policy and Procedure handbook. The paperwork will be allocated 80% of the grade and the materials will be allocated the remaining 20% of the grade.
