In this module we learned about risk and uncertainty in healthcare. Read both articles attached to the module’s discussion forum. Define bounded risk measures that could be retrieved from care interactions discussed in the “Big Data in Health Care: Using Analytics To Identify And Manage High-Risk And High-Cost Patients” article and quality measures that could be used to quantify such measures (at least 3). An example for a risk measure (cannot be used in the write-up) could be a range for patients’ BMI if they have been admitted for surgery and it will increase their risk for developing infections or complications.
Review the “Defining and Measuring Diagnostic Uncertainty in Medicine: A Systematic Review” and “Variations In Physician Practice: The Role Of Uncertainty” articles and discuss the aspects of care delivery (diagnostic, treatment, consultation, …) that are based on unbounded variables and cannot be quantified (at least 3). Also discuss potential measures that could be included in health information systems such as EHR/EMR systems and used to capture data related to the uncertainties. These measures although will only estimate the potential uncertainty present in the care system they could assist providers in the decision-making process.
