In this assignment we explore the Implicit Association Test (IAT) as a means of studying explicit and implicit prejudice. The IAT is commonly used to bring our unconscious biases into our awareness – as social psychologist, we want to understand the assumptions behind this method and the outcomes associated with it. In this discussion we will also explore actions we take to reduce prejudice and discrimination. This discussion has TWO PARTS, please do both. Why IAT? “The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is one of those rare research tools that has transcended the lab to catch the attention of not just the social psychologists, who use it in increasing numbers, but also a large swath of the general public. Describe how the Implicit Association Test measures the implicit prejudice (~1 paragraph): be sure to include the role of priming and reaction speed in your description. What was your internal response when the test was asking you to associate negative terms or ideas to a particular group of people? Provide specific examples. D. What do you think, could a person alter the test results to appear to be more or less biased? Explain why or why not and keep in mind the database has millions of users – the sample size is very large. E. After experiencing and exploring your thoughts on the IAT, explain why or why not it is important to measure stereotypes via implicit associations (as opposed to explicit attitudes)? Write a reflection on Dr. Atiba Goff’s point regarding addressing racism (~1 paragraph): What is the problem with trying to change people’s hearts and minds? How can we change the definition of racism to make racism a solvable problem? How is measurement an important part of the solution? What actions do you think we individually need to do to be an Anti-Racist community? What actions are you doing? THIS is the most important question, please do not skip it.
