In the field of gynecology surgery, which is a commonly identified clinical practice area, there are interest groups attempting to bring a change to abortion laws. There have been new, game changing findings that prove that abortion in pregnant woman is completely safe within 24 weeks of conceiving. Abortion is completely legal and safe today unlike what it has been historically. There were clinical restrictions for women to get fetus aborted due to a few major reasons. Firstly, there was widespread thinking that abortions are not safe for humans. Secondly, religiously inclined people proclaimed that abortion was a sin and there should be a ban to conserve life.
Thirdly, there was general taboo on the topic for lawmakers. Today, it is proven by research that bans on abortion can risk lives of mothers. Women staying pregnant in spite of spotted risks are at a higher danger of death. Between 2013-18, maternal mortality rate was almost 24 deaths per 100000 births (Baldwin, Johnson, Broussard, Tello-Perez, Madera, Ze-Noah & Aiken, 2022). This number is even higher for colored women. There is speculation that maternal loss of life rate will jump from 18% to 39% if states choose to ban abortion as per the latest Roe vs Wade ruling (Osborne, Huang, Overall, Sutton, Petterson, Douglas & Sibley, 2022).
In March 2022, WHO issued new, research backed guidelines to prevent maternal mortality. The UN led initiative had their director state that safe abortion is covered under healthcare of society. There were clinical and delivery of services related recommendations around removing barriers to get aborted. WHO also aimed to remove wait times and approvals so that abortion at healthcare centers can be carried out in a smooth manner. These are the leading cause of complication that disrupt an otherwise normal process. Another institutional group that has shown support to this clinical process is American Nurse Association.
They released a statement in March stating that they advocate safe abortion. According to ANA, all humans have the right to privacy and the right to make decisions. Based on their independent research, ANA claims that abortion is related to health of women and nurses as well other caretakers can discuss the pros of abortion and risks, when talking to patients (Osborne, Huang, Overall, Sutton, Petterson, Douglas & Sibley, 2022). ANA also stated officially that nurses have the right to pull out of participation of a process in case they are not medically or ethically convinced.
