Implicit bias is an unconscious attitude and/or stereotype one holds towards a person or group of people. One’s implicit bias can be in direct contradiction to a person’s espoused beliefs and values. As social worker’s we must continuously self-assess for implicit bias. This bias has the potential to cloud one’s judgment, decision-making, and/or impact authentic engagement (Chafota, 2020). In SW855 each of you engaged in Harvard University’s Project Implicit Social Attitudes assessment. For this assignment, you will complete modules 3 and 4 of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity’s Implicit Bias Module Series (https://kirwaninstitute.osu.edu/implicit-bias-training) to understand your own biases and begin to mitigate unwanted biases. The tests should take you 20 minutes or less. Take time to reflect on the results of your assessment. Consider the Implicit Attitude Test you took in SW855, the positionality paper you wrote in SW856, and our ethical obligations as social workers. In a one-to-three-page paper, write a reflective paper exploring: what you have learned about your own implicit biases since SW855 and SW856, have you done any further exploration of your implicit biases or taken steps to address them, how does the awareness of your own implicit biases help your awareness of social justice in your practice, and specific strategies you can employ to mitigate implicit bias (consider your points of privilege to advance social justice issues). For the purposes of this assignment, you are welcome to share as little or as much as you choose about your own IAT results, but you ARE asked to share what you have learned from the experience. This assignment is a reflective assignment; therefore, your paper should address your reflective thoughts and what you have learned/considered from your IAT results. Spend time thinking about the prompts before responding. Even though it is a reflection paper, it should be written as an academic paper, using APA 7th edition, with an introduction and a concluding paragraph. Be sure to include any appropriate citations.
