The group facilitator can use different types of group therapy to improve the patient’s symptoms. One psychotherapy approach is supportive/therapeutic groups. This type of approach focuses on group relations and interactions of members in the group. The mental health professional helps the patients in the group to develop adaptive coping skills which help to promote mental health. This approach encourages problem-solving. The facilitator may use this approach in patients who are diagnosed with depression, or anxiety, or who may have a hard time coping with stressful situations. As the groups are involved in activities, the leader of the group becomes more of a facilitator and assists the group to resolve disagreements as they arise (Barkley, 2022).

In addition, supportive/therapeutic group psychotherapy can be used in higher-functioning patients, as well as in patients who are chronically lower-functioning (Van Den Beldt et al., 2021).

The support group consists of six teenage girls between the ages of 13 and 15 years who have an anxiety disorder. The stages of group therapy development include three phases, which include the initial phase, the working phase, and the termination phase. In each phase, the group activities, leaders’ expectations, and members’ behaviors are discussed. In the initial phase, the rules will be established with members and the leader, orient members to the group process, encourage participation and promote a trusting environment. Some members may also have fear of not being accepted or being overly polite in this phase. In the working phase, group activities will include completion of the assigned task, problem-solving, and decision-making. The leader’s role becomes to decreases and he/she becomes more of a facilitator helping to resolve conflicts and fostering cohesiveness. The members learn to accept criticism and manage conflicts in the group. In the final stage, there is a sense of accomplishment or loss. The leader encourages reminiscing, goals are reviewed, and outcomes are discussed.

In a support group with adolescents who are in different stages of development, one may encounter issues of confidentiality, talkativeness, and lack of engagement. According to Malhotra and Baker (2022), the facilitator is not required to solve the disagreements; however, he/she must make an educated decision on how to deal with the disagreement based on the interest of the group. It is useful to address the disagreement, as it may be a chance for the group to learn. Individual patient confidentiality can be difficult to maintain, especially in groups with adolescents who may not fully understand the importance of keeping information confidential due to their developmental stage. The facilitator may also have less control over what information gets shared within the group. The facilitator must seek guidance when faced with these challenges to protect the interest of both the facilitator and the patients in the group. The situation or challenge will determine how the challenge is handled (Yearwood, 2021). When a disagreement arises, the facilitator should use the last five to ten minutes of the session to speak with patients individually and allow them to voice their concerns (Malhotra & Baker, 2022)
