I seek to study and identify the benefits of in-home mental health counseling for the Medicaid population of New York state. Through research, I seek to understand the barriers that people may face, analyze the usage of treatment methods, and gauge effectiveness. While understanding the risk that the population faces for an increased risk of severe mental illness (7.5 percent vs. 4.1), a study by Anakwenze (2013) found that untreated mental illness may conversely increase the risk of living in poverty. I currently work in private practice as a director that serves this population through in-home therapy; our goal is to end cyclical poverty through early and consistent intervention in dealing with the family system. We have found the method of delivery to be effective and well-received as it addresses the family as a whole and provides the clinician with a full view of the environment. The in-home model has demonstrated consistent compliance and continued engagement as 84% of our 912 clients are seen weekly. Our delivery model studied through a partnership with a local hospital has also demonstrated a decrease in hospitalizations as individuals under consistent care have shown a reduction in inpatient treatment; the limited findings were congruent with national studies conducted by Chen et al.
