Nurses work hard in taking care of their patients and their families to help patients recover from their illness/disease. They work hand in hand with an interdisciplinary team made of physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, lab, social workers, residents, dieticians, etc., to help deliver the best patient care outcomes. Nurses though have their struggles in the work environment that consists of conflict with others, nurse bullying, and common stressors. Conflict Conflict is sometimes hard to avoid, but what should one do if the person you work with is consistently causing problems or drama. This nurse has had to deal with this recently, working with an individual that lives off drama. An example that recently happened, was on a neonatal transport. This nurse still gets butterflies in his stomach when transporting neonatal patients due to its continuing to be an on-learning process. This individual told the rest of the team that this nurse was very scared and spastic of transporting these patients behind his back. She thought this nurse had left the room but did not know this nurse was just one room away and could still hear what she was saying. This nurse entered the room to hear the room go silent as this nurse confronted that person. This nurse acknowledged to her that this nurse was feeling nervous and that it was okay, because the day you do not, is the day an incident occurs. This nurse encouraged her to openly discuss the transport and her feelings regarding this nurse’s performance. Nurse Bullying Another struggle nurses face at the workplace is nurse bullying. Despite the nursing shortage, nurses should praise one another, work as a team, and continue to encourage others to be great nurses and help to provide patient care and satisfaction. “Potential signs and symptoms that bullying is a problem at your workplace or in your unit can include grievances by employees against their manager, declining work performance of dedicated and hard-working employees, increased stress and tensions between staff in a unit, poor morale, reported fear of a co-worker by other workers, individual symptoms of depression, and increased absenteeism in a team” (Chapovalov & Van Hulle, 2015). As nurses, we should see after one another if these signs and symptoms are noted in the workplace. It is not healthy for that individual, the team, and the patients. Stressors in the Nursing Workplace Despite nurse bullying and conflict at the workplace, there are also stressors in nursing. Some of these stressors’ nurses face are lack of personnel, working overtime, working with difficult patients and families, working conditions, lack of resources, working nights, dealing with death, exposure to infection, salary, etc., (Starc, 2018). Stressors should be decreased, if possible, by healthcare organizations to help nurses deliver the best care available. “The management of all healthcare institutions should clearly define strategies for reducing stress depending on the size of the institution and the financial resources at its disposal, .: programs for improving well-being in the workplace, the introduction of relaxation techniques as part of job training (autogenic training, yoga), including a list of measures for ensuring proper safety at work and consequently protecting the health of nurses” (Strac, 2018). This will help improve patient satisfaction scores at their healthcare organization. Nurses must also do their part in decreasing these stressors by coping with daily work stress. Examples they may help themselves are spending time on outside interests and taking time for yourself, increasing your professional knowledge, identifying problem-solving resources, identifying realistic expectations for yourself, developing good communication skills, and treating co-workers with respect, etc., (Weiss & Tappen, 2015, p. 192). Healthcare organizations communicating with nurses and meeting their needs will help improve with daily stressors they face to prevent burnout and nurse leaving their careers.
