The difference between a nursing and a medical problem is that a nursing practice problem is noted during assessments, often from a condition or disease of a patient. The nursing practice problem includes the patient’s care needs from the time they step foot in the healthcare environment, during the doctor’s diagnosis, and assessing patient needs after the care (Grand Canyon University, 2018). The nursing problem assessment requires a comprehensive collection of data on the patient. The nursing problems center on the holistic being, showing the physical, psychosocial, cultural, economic, and even spiritual aspects of the individual, family, or community. On the other hand, medical problems touch diseases and illness pathology (Baldwin et al., 2016). The medical problem is stated by the clinical signs and symptoms manifested by the patient. While the nurse will be interested in the prevention of diseases or their effect on the general well-being of an individual, the physician will be keen about the causes, diseases course, and treatment.
For instance, a physician may diagnose a patient with a cerebrovascular accident. However, a nurse practice problem will go beyond the disease process, look at the patient’s total well-being and response to the stroke and give problem statements like impaired communication, the risk for fall, and altered family function. While the medical problem only gives information about the disease pathology, the nursing problem expresses the impact of the diseases on the patient’s whole health and the family. Therefore, when formulating a PICOT question, we need to develop an advanced view of the patient’s case (Martha, 2018). To develop this view, we need to use a nursing practice problem to give more information that will yield better healthcare results.
