he research proposal criteria is: A multi-modal investigation of emotion processing in healthy ageing participants. The multi-modal part means that I need to use 2 methods (techniques) to investigate the brain regions involved in emotion processing. The methods / techniques I use can examine either the structure, function or neurochemistry of the brain (brain regions) and I need to choose any 2 methods that are either â Neuroimaging (MRI / DWI / fMRI / MRS â not PET scans though), Electrophysiology (EEG / MEG) or Brain Stimulation (TMS / TES). In order to investigate the brain / changes in the brain due to ageing. The proposalâs focus is in terms of how changes in the ageing brain (people ages 65+) can influence / change emotion processing. This can be compared to emotion processing in younger adult brains where ageing hasnât occurred as much for example. The topic is emotion processing and the focus can be specifically on anything to do with emotion recognition, emotion regulation or any particular emotion processing (does not have to be on all aspects involved in emotion processing). It also must focus on the changes in the healthy (normal) ageing brain â linking brain and behaviour â so canât focus or include participants with brain impairments (dementia etc) or brain trauma. There are 4 main sections of the essay / proposal: 1. Literature review & rational 2. Research question, aims & hypotheses (donât include more than 2 hypotheses) 3. Methodology 4. Expected Outcomes The literature review (rationale) and methodology should be the largest sections. The methodology is subdivided into 5 sections 1. Participants (including sample size / age / gender) â no people with brain damage / impairments like dementia can be used. 2. Cognitive Tasks used (there must be a baseline / neutral condition) / Questionnaires 3. Techniques / method (this is the techniques used to look at the brain. Needs to also include details about what happened / when or how they were used) 4. Design (donât use longitudinal) 5. Data analysis (this doesnât need to be detailed or technical â just need to simply state the stats I will use & why) The expected outcomes part needs to go beyond the hypotheses and also briefly talk about the researches application to the real word. â this can talk about how the results can be used for further research or help individuals / groups / health care services / social policy makers etc. Throughout the proposal I canât just state what I am choosing to do but I need to justify why I am doing it in that particular way â justify why I choose to look at a specific brain region (maybe because it changes with age) / why I chose particular set of participants etc. The proposal needs to find a gap in the literature or find something that has been already done but is missing something and chose to do it in a way that covers a different element. It canât just completely replicate something already out there. Also need to include APA in text citations and everything needs to be referenced if taken from somewhere. Can you please include a reference list at the end (only if this doesnât go into the word count that Iâm paying for â if it does just list the names / dates and I can find the full reference myself) Also, I donât need a summery / conclusion as I can just write that myself. I have also attached some more notes around the structure of the proposal.
