Formative Activity: Thematic Analysis of a Transcript As part of your qualitative report (that is due at the end of Unit 9), you are required to submit an analysis of your data. Thematic analysis is the process of identifying patterns or themes within qualitative data. The aim of this activity is for you to analyse a chosen transcript in relation to a chosen research question using thematic analysis and to receive some feedback on this as this work will form part of the analysis section in your qualitative report. You CAN use the same transcript and research question for this formative activity and Qualitative Report if you wish. This is your opportunity to submit your analysis to your tutor to gain some non-graded feedback that will help you with your assignment. Instructions 1. Choose and download a transcript: In preparation for your Thematic Analysis, you will need to select one of the three participants below. You will then need to download their interview transcript and use this for your analysis. The interview transcript can be found by clicking on your chosen participant’s name. Please choose one of the following participants for your assignment: Alexander Trevor Deborah You also have access to the Friendship Interview Guide and Part 1 of the interview videos for Alexander, Trevor and Deborah. For your interest, you can view their interview videos and download the interview guide that was used for this research, but this is not essential to this task. These interviews were conducted in Spring 2008 at Liverpool John Moores University by Tanya Corker and Alasdair Gordon-Finlayson. They took place in a small room at Liverpool John Moores University. Ethical approval was provided by York St John University (where the project was co-ordinated) and Liverpool John Moores University (where the interview was organised). You should consult the Dataset User Guide for further information about the ethical considerations and consent procedures that were in place for the original interviews. These transcripts, interview guide document and interview videos, have been provided by the TQRMUL Working Group, as a dataset teaching resource. Please note: As you have been provided with these transcripts, you will NOT need to reference them or provide in-text citations for them within your work. You should, however, continue to correctly reference all other resources that you include. 2. Select a research question: Choose one of the following research questions for your assignment: What is perceived as being important for friendship? How are friendships maintained over time or distance? How do friendships change? 3. Refer to your reading and the guidance documents from Unit 7: This includes reviewing the following files: Worked Example of Thematic Analysis Phases 1 and 2. Worked Example of Thematic Analysis Phases 3, 4 and 5. 4. Follow the stages outlined in the worked example documents to analyse your transcript: Specifically, you should make sure that you: Think about your chosen research question as you identify 1st order/descriptive codes, group them together and identify 2nd order/interpretive codes. Identify 2-5 themes which encompass or overarch some of the interpretive groupings you created in phase 2. Gather all the data together relevant to each potential theme. Check that these themes can be used to answer your research question: For example, if your research question was – Can parents and children ever be friends? A theme about: Barriers to parent/child friendship could be used to answer this. 5. Present your analysis visually: Look at the example illustrations given in the âWorked Example of Thematic Analysis Phases 3, 4 and 5 documentâ. 6. Submit your work to your tutor for non-graded feedback: You will need to include the annotated transcript* (or a photograph of your work, if you prefer to work on paper for this phase). This is so your tutor can see how you have developed your codes and where in the text they come from. Your list of 1st order and 2nd order codes that you created following phases 1 and 2. Your illustrated diagram of your analysis that clearly shows the themes developed, and how the codes relate to them. * Please note that it is fine to show working documents for the annotated transcript as long as it is readable. 7. You will receive non-graded feedback around: How well you have carried out the thematic analysis. How clearly you have illustrated the analysis of your data. If relevant to your work, you may receive comments about how well the codes fit the data/participantâs words; how well you have grouped the codes; the relevance of themes to your research question; whether you have fully analysed the data or need to repeat the process again a few more times. Please use this feedback to help you to develop your analysis for your final qualitative report.
