For this week’s discussion, I’d like for all of you to watch the video “Century of Self.” The video is a documentary of Freud’s American nephew, Edward Bernay’s, who is credited with applying his uncle’s theories to politics and business to manipulate the masses. In addition, you are also required to read either the article entitled “The Politics and Mortal Terror” OR the article entitled “Of Wealth and Death.” These two articles discuss applications of the Terror Management Theory (TMT) to understanding political preferences and materialism/consumption behavior, respectively. The TMT has served as the basis for hundreds of research studies and basically claims that many of our behaviors are motivated by (largely) unconscious death anxiety.
In your reflection, please briefly summarize what you learned from watching the video and reading the article and also share your reactions them.
