For this assignment each student will identify two sources of evidence that could be used to help answer the group PICOT question. The sources should be in the form of single, primary quantitative or qualitative research studies (primary source), or systematic reviews (meta-analyses or meta-syntheses are acceptable — scoping reviews, literature reviews, narrative reviews, integrative reviews, etc. are not acceptable). The evidence should not be a clinical (quality improvement article, evidence based program article) or opinion article. Though some authors identify literature reviews as systematic reviews, the work does not represent the criteria required for a systematic review. For this assignment, only true systematic reviews can be used. The sources of the evidence need to be a peer-reviewed journal or a database such as the Cochrane Review and be current within the last five years. For those who need a review from nursing research on how to do a literature search, I crafted a review for you: Something to keep in mind as you start your literature search for your PICOT question: it is not unusual for PICOT keywords to change once you start searching databases. As novice PICOT writers and for those new to searching databases, you may find the literature has keywords that are more fruitful than your chosen keyword(s); that said, this is not related to the content of your keyword, only the verbiage. So please keep an open mind when searching the literature as changing the verbiage of your keyword to better fit with the literature and your search is OK if it brings good results (and is OK for the purposes of this class); however, you must communicate with your group members if altering your keywords to ensure everyone is doing the same. Take home message: we learn as we search, it is a process. This is why documentation on what you’ve searched is important so you have reference for what worked, what didn’t, and why you used what you did so if you need to return to literature, you won’t need to repeat steps re: figuring out searchable keywords. Also, please keep in mind the “T” in PICOT is optional, so you may choose to omit that if it is making your search too complex. Requirements for assignment: 1. State your Group PICOT question. 2. Identify two sources of evidence from within the last 5 years from FAU Library databases. 3. Create an evidence table for the sources of evidence (no more than 2 pages – maximum 1 page per article). Edit this table carefully. Double-spacing is not required. A template is provided (see example below). Please keep in mind your skills in critical appraisal when using evidence and completing your evidence table. 4. Submit the two sources of evidence in the form of a PDF file with your evidence table (multiple attachments can be uploaded with the assignment in Canvas). Check to assure that the file can be opened prior to submitting. Do not submit a link to the documents, i.e. Google Doc – you must attach each individual item for the assignment – the evidence table and the two articles.
