Q: What is the Evidence Based paper?
The EB paper will help you synthesize major concepts from the class. You should:
1. Choose a clinical question.
2. Research the literature for an answer to your clinical question.
3. Write a 5-8-page paper summarizing the clinical question and answer. The paper should be in APA
format. Major topics should include, at minimum:
a. Overview of population and clinical question
b. Search methods
c. Discussion of findings
d. Suggestions for future research
e. White paper (appendix)
f. Literature matrix (appendix)
4. Complete a reference page in APA format.
5. Check the paper against the grading rubric and make corrections or revisions as needed.
6. Submit the paper (.doc or .docx) in the drop box.
7. Look at your TurnItIn score and ensure it is less than 30%.
8. Look at the rubric in the assignment box.
These headings can be worded as above or reworded to your liking. However, the content must be presented in
your paper. Please refer to the rubric for more detail.
Q: How do I format the EB paper?
A: The paper:
o Must be between 5-8 pages (this does not include the title page, abstract or references). Points
will be deducted for papers more than 8 pages.
o Must be typed in Microsoft Word and checked for spelling and grammar errors.
o Must adhere to APA 7th Edition format. You can go to
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/10/ for a “cheat sheet” on APA formatting.
o Must be turned in via GeorgiaView assignment drop box as an attachment.
o Must be referenced appropriately.
? Include evidence from at least 5 primary sources. Your primary sources must be listed on
your literature matrix. This means that you may not cite your textbook.
? Do not write in first person. Instead, summarize important aspects of the topic. In the
critique section, avoid referring to yourself. Simply state “The literature omits…” for
example.
o The paper will receive a TurnItIn score. The score must be less than 30% in order for the paper
to be graded. If it is 30% or greater, the paper will receive a grade of zero. You may submit the
paper to the dropbox as many times necessary to get your score below 30%.
Q: How do I form my clinical question?
A: Think of a clinical outcome that you think needs improvement. Then think of a possible solution(s). One
good way to format your clinical question is: “What impact does XX (solution) have on XX (outcome)?” Or
you could ask: “Is XX (solution A) more effective than XX (solution B) in improving XX (outcome?” The
PICOT format is also a great way to form your clinical question, where:
• P: Population/patient – age, gender, ethnicity, individuals with a certain disorder
• I: Intervention/indicator (Variable of Interest) – exposure to a disease, risk behavior, prognostic factor
• C: Comparison/control – could be a placebo or “business as usual” as in no disease, absence of risk
factor, Prognostic factor B
• O: Outcome – risk of disease, accuracy of a diagnosis, rate of occurrence of adverse outcome
• T: Time – the time it takes for the intervention to achieve an outcome or how long participants are
observed
You can also ask an open-ended question like “What is the best way to treat XX?” Read Chapter 2 in your
textbook for more information on this, but you must have an outcome and intervention/solution somewhere in
your question.
Q: What if I have difficulty finding articles to support my question?
A: Some questions have a very narrow focus, and therefore finding articles will be difficult. For example,
searching for articles regarding White female teen patients with Sickle Cell Anemia will be difficult. In this
case, it would be best to cast a wider net. Focus on a broader patient population or problem. In this example,
you could look at all teen patients with Sickle Cell Anemia. The literature search will inform you of whether
your topic is too narrow simply by whether you can locate enough information to write your paper.
Literature Matrix
Q: What is a literature matrix?
A: You will create a matrix (i.e. table) of resources to be used in your scholarly paper. Do not include sources
that you decide not to use in the paper.
Q: How do I know what to include in the literature matrix?
A: It is your choice for column headers, formatting, etc. There are examples in the course site to help you
decide. What must be included is all relevant information paraphrased into your own words that you will use
for the paper. Instead of stating in the matrix “good statistics provided”, you must actually discuss the statistics.
The goal for the matrix is to include ALL needed information so you do not have to revisit the original source
again.
White Paper
Q: What is the White Paper?
A: This is a persuasion letter. The goal for the White Paper is to write a letter to someone (insurance company,
member of congress, etc.) that can help you solve your problem. You should think of a problem you see with
your clinical population and propose a solution in your letter.
Q: Does the White Paper have to be in APA format?
A: No, APA is not required. Format it as an actual letter.
Q: How long should the White Paper be?
A: A 1-2-page paper is reasonable. They may not read a letter that is too long.
Q: What information should I include?
A: Provide a short summary of the clinical problem the letter will address, such as: How widespread is the
issue? What are current treatment options? Then ask for what you think is missing that will make a difference.
You must ask for something (i.e. pay for XX treatment, fund this education, etc.
