Ethical Dilemmas in Medicine & the Four Principles Approach
As we have learned, an ethical dilemma occurs when there are two moral imperatives neither of which is obviously acceptable or preferable AND to follow one imperative is to transgress the other. The Four Principles approach to ethical dilemmas frames ethical dilemmas in medicine in similar terms, defining an ethical dilemma as a conflict between two (of the four) principles. In other words, you are faced with an ethical dilemma when you cannot follow both moral principles at the same time.
Ethical dilemmas occur all the time in medicine and thus it is important for us to learn how to identify them when they arise.
(1) Give an original example of an ethical dilemma that could arise in the medical setting (e.g., clinical practice, research, etc.). Use the Four Principles approach to identify and explain the conflict. (Remember, you only need to discuss the two principles that are in conflict).
