Use the information you have learned so far this semester, specifically the three theories of reading and five building blocks of reading to answer this question. Integration of information, rather than just a repeat of the knowledge presented to you, is important for doing well on this test. I want to see how you’ve synthesized and put together a larger understanding of how kids learn to read.
Requirements: This is an essay to be written on your own. You may use your notes, class slides, assigned readings, and other articles made available through class or during the completion of your weekly tasks. You are to submit a written response/essay to the question, that is one you have created and written on your own. You will be asked to make a declaration to this effect when submitting your assignment – see the final page of this document. Do not plagiarize any part of your response, please.
Length: Five (5) double-spaced pages. Don’t fret if you go slightly over, just try to keep it succinct. I never set page limits on assignments, but I know someone will ask for one, so here it is.
Grading Rubric:
The tests will be graded based on the content included according to the scheme below. Your final grade within the letter range (A- or A or A+ with the associated number grade) will be determined by how clearly the writing is (you should have an introduction paragraph, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph, for example) and the richness of the links being made. The more fluently you demonstrate your understanding, the higher your grade will be.
The grading rubric presents several potential scenarios, and it is possible that your response will not fit neatly within one of the boxes.
Remember, the point is to show me what you’ve learned and what you understand. Thus, you must use your own words.
A range • Demonstrates a clear understanding of all three theories

• All terms used are explained/defined (e.g., phonemic awareness, lexical quality) so your understanding is clear
B range • Demonstrates a clear understanding of all three theories but lacks the integration OR
• Demonstrates a clear understanding of 2 theories with the integration of how the theories complement each other
• Incorporates the five pillars/building blocks
• Defines all terms used
C range • Explains 1-2 theories but lacks integration OR
• Explains all three theories but lacks integration and lacks the five pillars
• Terms are not defined
D range • Explains one theory OR
• Discusses the five pillars/building blocks
F range • If you put in an honest effort to learn something and that is reflected in your assignment, you will not fail.
