As an MSN prepared nurse, I want to have a leadership, forward-thinking mindset. A lot of being a BSN prepared nurse has involved critical thinking, yes, but also a lot of task completion and following policies and procedures that have been implemented by leaders above me. Going to a higher level will mean being able to contribute to developing practices that are supported by evidence and are consistent with nursing practice models.
Evidence-based practice is something I have heard a lot about in my education but also seen used as a nurse in the hospital. A couple examples of changes that were made based on evidence-based practice are changing vital sign frequency to allow for restorative sleep and discontinuing treatment of COVID patients with convalescent plasma.
Evidence-based practice is essentially taking research and applying it to current policies and procedures. This can improve outcomes by implementing practices that have been shown to help. Instead of determining how we will take care of patients by opinions or historical traditions (“that’s the way we’ve always done it”), it is based on real data

Evidenced based practice is the platform on which nursing care and practice is based. As healthcare evolves over time, we must continue to look for new and better ways to care for our patients. The value in evidence based practice is immeasurable. Evidence based practice provides us the opportunity to give the best and most up to date care. The research and methods behind developing evidenced based practice have been vetted over time and through trial and error. Reliable methods of research have been developed so that we can implement changes that improve outcomes for our patients. As Bachelor’s prepared nurses we have learned more about the research process behind evidence based practice and the importance of why it is used to guide nursing care. This understanding gives additional value in that we are not just making changes because we are told to, we are understanding the rationale behind it. As Master’s prepared nurses we begin to educate and encourage our co-workers to further understand the value of evidenced based practice and be more active in seeking it out or participating in its development.
By staying up to date with the most current research and evidence based practice, you can implement policies and make changes that support optimal outcomes for patients. Identification of evidence and best practices result in the development of guidelines to provide the best care for patients. If we did not have these guidelines there would be no standard of care to follow. Following the most up to date standards of care improves patient outcomes by providing care based on recent research and science.
