Prompt
In this discussion you will analyze an environmental health crisis using three different systems thinking tools. For your main post, please address the following:
Part 1âSWOT (~100 words): Review the literature for an example of a recent environmental health crisis caused by a zoonotic or vector-borne disease. Summarize two (2) strengths and two (2) weaknesses of how an organization responded to the crisis and then two (2) opportunities and two (2) threats that occurred outside the organization that affected the response to the environmental health crisis.
Part 2âPESTLE (~150 words): Consider the various types of populations involved with this environmental health crisis. Respond to the following questions:
Political Factors: What were the political factors that either caused the crisis, played out during the crisis, or involved the public health response to the crisis? How do these factors make populations or communities more vulnerable? Please relate these factors to health equity.
Economic Factors: How does the economy relate to the cause of the crisis, the event of the crisis itself, or the response/aftermath of the crisis? What are the economic impacts to the disadvantaged, marginalized, or vulnerable populations or communities? Please relate these factors to health equity.
Social Factors: What are the relevant social determinants of health associated with the cause of the crisis, the event of the crisis itself, or the response/aftermath of the crisis? Which populations or communities were disadvantaged? Why? Please relate these factors to health equity.
Technological Factors: How could technological infrastructures support public health efforts? Technological infrastructures may include hardware, software/apps, networks/Internet, etc.
Legal Factors: How could policy or legal efforts support public health efforts? (International, national, and state legislative changes; potential changes such as new industrial relations regulations, climate change laws, occupational safety and health laws, etc.)
Environmental Factors: What other environmental factors support or hinder public health efforts?
Part 3âOther Systems Thinking Tool (~50 words): Use another systems thinking tool of your choosing to either define, describe, or analyze the crisis situation. Attach your finalized systems thinking tool to your main post and provide a brief summary within your main post. Suggested systems thinking tools:
Force Field Analysis
Fishbone Diagram
Concept Map
Causal Loop Diagram
Please see the Minnesota Department of Health’s Public Health & QI Toolbox for additional tools, techniques, templates, and examples.
In all posts, please make certain to include in-text citations throughout and a reference list.
