The subject of informed consent becomes especially important when research is conducted with a population that can be easily coerced into highly risky non-therapeutic research (Dakic, T., 2020). Current research ethic frameworks now allow for research on persons unable to provide consent as long as the research is ethically and scientifically das well as there are additional safeguards for the participants (Dakic, T., 2020). The research should likely benefit the participants themselves or to benefit others with the same capacity-limiting condition (Dakic, T., 2020). There should be no more than minimal risk to the participant of the research. The other dilemma that a researcher may face when researching these populations is the inclusion of their input into the discourse. Conducting qualitative research is one way in which a counselor can ensure that the individual with an intellectual disability can become part of the research instead of a subject that the research is being conducted on.
