Discussion question: Describe the major sections of a research report used in counseling research. What is the core content included in each section of the report? Distinguish between the writing for research purposes versus writing for standard graduate level courses. How are they similar? How are they different? Classmate response: The main sections of a research report are the abstract, introduction, method, results, discussion, and references. An abstract is a summary of the overall paper. It includes a mild description of each of the sections and includes the research question, a summary of the method, basic results, and the important conclusions (Price, 2017). The introduction is made up of the opening, the literature review, and the closing. It introduces the topic and the importance of it while including other studies that have discussed similar topics with their results. The closing reintroduces the research question and the hypothesis. Method explains how the study is conducted, similar to a cooking recipe. The materials used, the technique, description of participants, length of the study are all in this section. Next is the results that includes the results, a statistical analysis, and summary of the results. The discussion includes a summary of the research, theoretical implications, practical implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research (Price, 2017). The references include every single author or study that was referenced in this study on a works cited page. Research papers differ from typical graduate school papers because they are answering a specific hypothesis or question. In addition, it is research conducted on other people’s research and does not include the writer’s opinion. Other essays typically include the point of view of the writer and are less structured. Writing for research also gives a bigger audience such as scientists, doctors, or other counseling professionals. Professional research is written to advance the field as well as be recognized for one’s hard work. It also includes actual research done by the writer. In school, research papers are more like literary reviews, summarizing other people’s research.
