going through the course has assisted me in having new knowledge about the foundation of mental health nursing. I have learned that mental health nursing involves numerous interventions that help people with mental problems to recover from their conditions (Varcarolis, 2016). The interventions in managing mental illness include spiritual, biological, psychosocial, and physical therapies. At the beginning of the course, I was interested in the objectives set. One of the objectives that impressed me and made me enjoy the course work was the scope of practice for mental health nurses. It was clear that a nurse working in the mental health sector must be equipped with knowledge and skills for handling patients experiencing different mental conditions ranging from depression to schizophrenia. The course has assisted me in broadening the legal guidelines in mental health, for instance, the Mental Healthcare Act 2017 (MHCA 2017), which talks about the rights of patients with mental illness and the ethical and legal responsibilities of healthcare professionals and the nurses (Bipeta, 2019). The acts have given me an idea of how I can handle the vulnerable groups of patients present at the healthcare facility. I have also learned how to evaluate and make treatment plans that adhere to the guidelines for treating mental conditions. The transferable skills that I have acquired in the course are the ability to talk to the patients and assess their mental status to translate the findings into the management plan. I will be able to use the ideas that relate to the mental care of different patients, different types of patient admissions, and the ability to adhere to nursing ethical principles in my future nursing practice. The knowledge I have gained in the course is comprehensive and will be beneficial when I educate and counsel the patients at the facility.
This a two different post from different students i just need a response to each one of them. some short
Mental illness can affect individuals of any age, socioeconomic status, ethnicity or nationality. Mental health nurses play an important role in the assessment, diagnosis and management of mental illnesses and other associated disorders. According to Leach et al. (2020), at least 10% of the global population is affected by a psychiatric disorder at one time of their lives. Furthermore, the cost of managing mental illnesses is very high making it crucial to focus on the problem from a professional level. The core nursing competency in this course is gaining the ability to use accurate nursing skills and logical thinking to address clientsâ cases relating to mental health and healthy living in general. The three components of mental health include social well-being, emotional well-being and psychological well-being. The knowledge acquired in this course will be used to improve clientsâ performance and well-being in all spheres of their lives. For example, in social well-being, clients recovering from mental illnesses such as depression are advised to have a solid social network to ensure that their issues are addressed as they present. In emotional well-being, mental health nurses should establish the emotional status of the client or patient during assessment. The knowledge acquired will increase my accuracy when assessing and diagnosing different mental disorders and illnesses. The knowledge will also help me when applying evidence-based practices in nursing intervention. Management of various mental disorders follows the DSM-V criteria. This course creates a platform to understand how the DSM-V criterion is used in differential diagnosis of different disorders and the management approach that should be used. Maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment is a cardinal goal in this course. Optimal client or patient outcomes cannot be achieved if nursing practice is not done in a safe environment. This course guides nurses to initiate preventive actions and adopt proactive approaches in their work. In mental health, nurses should be in a better position to identify stressors and neutralize them. The course introduces environmental health concepts that nurses should use when creating a safe environment for their patients and clients. Substance abuse is a serious problem in the United States. According to McLellan (2017), substances that are often abused can be classified into seven categories; – nicotine, alcohol, cannabinoids, opioids, depressants, stimulants and hallucinogens. Any harmful use of these substances is referred as substance abuse. Addictive disorder refers to the repetitive use of the substances mentioned above. Therefore, substance abuse and addictive disorder are interconnected since they lead to poor mental health and reduced overall quality of life. McLellan (2017) argues that alcohol is the most misused substance in the United States leading to addiction. As a mental health nurse, the knowledge acquired in this course will be used to develop management plans for such clients to help them cope with the problem. This course introduces students to psychobiologic disorders. The disorders include bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, dementia among others. The DSM-V criteria is one of the approaches used to classify the disorders since some share their clinical manifestations. This course not only helps learners understand the application of DSM-V criteria but also helps them to develop high levels of self-awareness when handling mental health patients and clients. Self-awareness helps nurses to have a dynamic approach when handling clients with diverse beliefs or backgrounds. Self-awareness also promotes cultural competence which is needed in nursing practice. Lastly, this course helps students develop crisis management skills when dealing with mental health patients. Some of the patients are violent while others are in dire need of assistance. A mental health nurse should establish the most appropriate course of action when dealing with different patients or clients.
