As we all know, collaboration in health care can be conceptually described as the ability of each health care professional to effectively take on additional roles within a team, to work cooperatively, to share problem-solving responsibilities, and to make effective and timely decisions necessary to formulate and carry out plans for patient care. In this case, it is not just a matter of simply medicating the patient, and the follow-up steps involved. In the case of pharmacology we can also consider elements such as the culture and spirituality of the patients, and of the rest of the team members. According to the literature reviewed, it has been observed that interprofessional collaboration between physicians, nurses and other members of the health care team increases the collective awareness of the types of knowledge and skills that each one possesses, always respecting the elements mentioned above. This also contributes to the quality and safety of care, also through continuous improvement in decision-making in various situations (Schaffler-Schaden et al., 2018).
It is generally recognized that nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals have different perceptions of their own of collaboration with each other, and not infrequently such important elements as individual culture and spirituality, and their influence on aspects such as safe medication of patients, are overlooked. Shared decision-making, teamwork and communication are usually recurring themes in the different reports on perceptions of collaboration among these personnel, and even with elements of patient care. As an example we can say that different interprofessional educational courses have been developed and implemented, and other intervention-type studies, which have focused on ways to improve collaboration in the healthcare environment among its professionals, with patients, and associated with the safe medication of patients (Granheim et al., 2018). In summary, we can say that this is a topic that requires our full attention, and support in respecting the elements evaluated here, mainly focused on the safe medication and care of our patients.
