You will write a 2.5-3 page double spaced, critical analysis paper that addresses gender representation in the media. You will choose a film, TV show, commercial, song, or other piece of media to analyze. Based on course readings and lecture, the content of the paper should consider the following questions (among others):
Who is the target audience (e.g., children, adolescents, older adults)?
What proportion of the characters are cisgender women, cisgender men, non-binary people, transgender people?
What kinds of activities are the characters engaging in and do these activities fit with stereotypical gender roles (e.g., differences between male and female characters in levels of aggressiveness or prosocial acts)?
How do race, sexual orientation, ability, or other demographic characteristics play a role?
You will be expected to utilize 4-5 theories, key terms, or concepts we’re learning about in class (from lecture and the book) and cite the source. Please bold these theories, key terms, or concepts in your paper. This is your own analysis, not an analysis already conducted by another source. Make sure that there is a clear focus and overarching point. You don’t have to answer all the questions above; those are just to get you started. However, you must address gender.
Have a strong thesis statement at the end of your introduction. Use topic sentences (similar to thesis) to provide the main point of each body paragraph. Each body paragraph should contribute evidence to your thesis statement. The goal of this exercise is to synthesize course material and apply it to an experience encountered outside of a formal classroom in a clear, concise manner.
