Every day, the complexity of electronic systems and the need for accurate timely data is increasing, making the educational levels of HI professionals increasing as well. Health informaticists are required to have technical skills in numerous areas such as computer interfaces, database management, business intelligence applications, report writing, and analytics (Easterling, 2021). Beyond that, HI professionals must be able to manipulate, interpret, assess health information in different situations. Being a HI professional can be considered a discipline because of the need to study the effective uses of information, aided by technology, that is being used to improve care delivery as well as individual and population health outcomes (Gibson, Dixon & Abrams, 2015). In general, the specialized skill sets needed for the evolving profession can vary from specializing in gathering data, extracting data to putting data together to create reports. Due to the increasing demands, there are several ways to advance in the field. Rather a person has an Associateâs, Bachelorâs, or Masterâs Degree, there are opportunities for all professionals with any education level. Members who graduate from a Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIM) program, can test to be a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). In order to get started to be an advanced HI professional, most members will begin as an entry-job level such as a coder, registrar, or a medical office administrator. Another way to advance is by passing the Certified Healthcare Technology (CHTS) exam, which is administered through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). This exam shows that professionals are understand the ins and outs of the different systems and its hardware, the installations, diagnoses of IT problems, as well as other areas to show proficiency in health IT. Beyond working in healthcare facilities, HI professionals can even be offered careers in law firms that specialize in medical malpractice, insurance companies, government agencies, or research firms specializing in healthcare (Easterling, 2021).
HI professionals hold great value because our healthcare system is a complex system and medical information requires special knowledge and skills in the medical field for the effective and efficient management of healthcare information (Alkraiji & Househ, 2014). Many times, there are gaps between providers who need to use health IT to provide health services and the technical IT people who are in charge of managing the complicated infrastructures of the IT systems. HI professionals are the staff members who bridge this gap. In order to provide quality care, providers must also stay up to date with the evolution of technology. It is the duty of HI professionals to ensure that providers know how to function electronic health records, patient portals and so forth, to be able to educate their patients effectively. For example, patients should be able to leave the healthcare facility with full knowledge of their health and how to communicate with their providers if they have further questions. Most of this communication is being done through an electronic system. For both providers and patients to understand how to communicate with each other, HI professionals are the starting point of passing the knowledge down the line.
âBut grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amenâ (2 Peter 3:18). This bible verse is about growth and progression. There is plenty of room to grow as a professional in the health informatics field; However, members must be willing to do what it takes to advance in the field. Once specific certificates and education is received, a HI profession can take over the whole healthcare facility if they wanted to. The field is limitless once all the required accreditation is obtained.

Discussion 2-
To speak about the future of Health Informatics is to address the current problem within Health Informatics. As we push towards a new age of telemedicine, health informatics would need to begin to accommodate that. With all of the accomplishments that the field of health informatics has achieved thus far, there is still work to be done to benefit all patients
An issue for health informatics is that there are multiple electronic medical records (EMR) with various levels of extensive training and demonstrate poor use interface. Vendors like Epic System have an extensive and specific process training. User-friendly interfaces and design are important for patient safety. Confusing interfaces and workflow incompatibility delays patient care (Middleton et al., 2013; Otokiti, 2018). Transitioning from paper to digital while maintaining HIPPA has been a delicate balance. With many EMRs there is a difficult balance with the ethical and privacy issues in health informatics as well as how much data is too much data (Otokiti,2018)? The amount of sensitive information stored in EMRs makes EMRs a target for cyber-attacks. Since the beginning of the 2020 pandemic, telehealth has increased exponentially. The difficulty with telehealth is both the provider and the patient must be in the same state. Conducting a telehealth visit across state lines is a violation. Telehealth cannot accurately determine a patient’s location (Otokiti,2018).
Technology has a whole is incorporating more artificial intelligent devices such as Amazon Echo and Apple Siri. Currently IBM Watson is being used at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (Sloan-Kettering) assisting oncologists in optimizing care for their cancer patients (Otokiti, 2018). Adaptive learning technology. Improving decision-making is the continuing goal of healthcare and health informatics. The data collected can be used to increase utilization and implementation in public health for better healthcare polices (Yogesh & Karthikeyan,2022). Health informatics is a mixture of computer science and information science. According to Yogesh & Karthikeyan (2022), âThe major purpose of Health Informatics is to increase our understanding of medicine and medical practice by using real-world medical dataâ (p.2). The Big Data collected from electronic health record (EHR) systems are used to improve disease prognosis and increase preventative care.
âAccept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. One personâs faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted themâ
~Romans 14:1-3 NIV
This bible verse reflects societies. Each person has their own weakness, their own shortcomings. We all need help in one form or another at one time or another. This assignment demonstrated the long-term goals of health informatics.
The future of health informatics may reach a point where all EMR vendors are compatible with one another, and the information has a universal format. This modification can improve the workflow of healthcare. Yogesh & Karthikeyan (2022) states that Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR) is necessary to share information regarding workflow state and the execution of workflow across the systems. Unifying data via interoperability and standardizing reporting methodologies have previously been discussed as an obstacle that is currently being worked on for the future of health informatics. Additional obstacles are data management, transform clinical data, and finding more appropriate use of health informatics (Yogesh & Karthikeyan, 2022) The significance of the data collected is to provide quality treatment for a society as a whole with the assistance of medical professionals and health policymakers.
