Consider the following questions and journal some of your responses to them. You do not need to share anything that you are uncomfortable sharing in the discussion but do consider the questions. Write a short paragraph or two summarizing your thoughts about the below questions.
What led me to become a counselor?
* After taking some counseling classes in undergrad I decided to change my major from social work. I realize how empathetic I was and wanted to be more specific in helping adolescents and adults and I felt as though counseling was that field for me.
What were my first experiences with people of color (or with Whites)?
* I grew up in a predominately white neighborhood and went to less diverse schools so my encounter was pretty normal.
What does it mean to be to be a racial/cultural being?
* ANSWER
What did I learn from my family about cultural diversity and differences?
* As I got older and I would hear my family members discuss certain things I started to realize the difference in society and how African Americans are treated.
What stereotypes and biases about individuals from other groups affect my life?
* Speak about African American women stereotypes and how they affect working black females in todays society.
Finally, talk about your reactions to both writing your own narrative and reading those in the chapter. Examine your emotional reactions through questions such as, “How does it feel to talk about the biases you hold toward members of other racial/ethnic groups?”
