Compassion in the Workplace
For this action assignment, select an intervention of compassion in the workplace or volunteer setting that you can implement this week. You will need to plan ahead by taking at least three data points before the intervention as a baseline (A). This intervention can be conducted with a supervisor, customer, colleague, or any person you are able to make contact with on a regular basis.
Implement the intervention early in the week (no later than Wednesday). Collect at least three data points after the intervention to demonstrate any change in behavior (B).
Examples of Interventions:
Ask how your selected individual is doing, and actively listen to his or her response with further questions to provide support and compassion.
Provide unsolicited positive feedback (e.g., “Your hard work means so much—thank you for all you do.”).
Go above and beyond for a customer or client (e.g., carry something, refer to relevant resources, take extra time).
Reach out to a colleague and offer support with a task that is not specifically within your assigned duties (as appropriate).
Examples of positive responses for Y axis:
Increased positive attitude demonstrated through higher rate of work completion, increase in positive comments, increased compliance with guidelines and requirements.
Nonverbal response (e.g., smiles, open body language).
Perceived increase in levels of professional engagement (e.g., returned support in task completion, increased participation in conversation).
You will submit a one to two-page reflection detailing your experiences before, during, and after intervention. As this is a reflection paper, you may write in the first person. Please include an APA formatted cover page, but no reference page is required.
In addition, create an AB design graph to accompany your response. This graph can be completed by hand as long as it is clear and legible and the image is submitted in MS Word or PDF format. A will be your data points for baseline (at least three), B will be your data points after baseline (compassionate intervention will be the line indicating a phase change). Your X axis will indicate the number of days (Day 1, Day 2, etc.) during the week and your Y axis will indicate the occurrence of positive responses before and after the intervention.
