Comparative Paper
As mentioned previously, this course examines the evolution of sexual minority representations from the 1950s through to the present day. Thus, for this paper, you are to contrast at least TWO cultural products. One must be from the 1950s up until the early 1980s, and the other must be from the mid-1980s to the present day. (Note: the term “cultural products” is broadly defined: it may be films that we have watched in class, films that you have viewed on your own; television series; comic books; etc.) This assignment will rely primarily on your evaluations of the films that are shown in class (as well as some that you are required to watch on your own time). However, I would strongly encourage students to consult some academic materials (e.g., Russo’s Celluloid Closet; scholarly journals such as “Enthymema,” “Jump Cut,” and “The Journal of Media and Cultural Studies.” Reviews provided by influential critics such as Pauline Kael, Vincent Canby, and Philip French also may prove useful, especially as they capture the prevailing “attitude” toward sexual minorities during the 1960s and 1970s. Kael, for example, in her critique of a “lesbian film” from the 1960s, pondered what women could do sexually with one another! Of course, any of the assigned readings may be incorporated into your comparative essay.
This comparative exercise should be approximately 10 pages in length (typed, double-spaced, 12-point font). No more than two pages should be allocated to summarizing the plot of the targeted films or key methodology/findings of the targeted articles. Rather, the focus is on articulating the ways in which they differ in terms of their representation of gay men or lesbian women. (If applicable, similarities also may be noted.)
