PââââââââââââââââââââUB574 Assignment 1 – Community Benefit Analysis This assignment asks you to conduct a community benefit analysis of a nonprofit hospital in the United States. The purposes are to help you (1) understand the linkages between community benefit expenditures and community health needs, and (2) practice data collection and analytical skills using Internet, Excel and Word programs. Instruction: 1. Please go to https://www.communitybenefitinsight.org/ This website presents community benefit data of tax-exempt hospitals in the U.S. The primary data source is the IRS Form 990, Schedule H. Additional data sources (such as the AHA hospital data, Kaiser Family Foundation, Hilltop Institute) are used to confirm nonprofit hospital status and provide contextual information about each hospital or health system. 2. Click the âSearchâ tab at the top of the webpage. 3. Enter search criteria and find a hospital of your interest. For example, under City, type âLos Angelesâ; under State, choose âCalifornia.â Then click the green âSearchâ button at the bottom. Note that you are not limited to CA hospitals. Use any criteria that most interest you. 4. The website will give you a list of hospitals that meet your search criteria. Click on anyone that doesnât have a star sign (., hospital filed as a single site, not as a group). For example, I choose Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles, CA). Click on the name of the hospital. Now you can see the data about this hospital. Make sure to also check the pull-down menus. Most of information presented here are from the IRS Form 990, Schedule H (see the attachment for a copy of the Schedule H form). Review the data about your chosen hospital and answer the following questions: 1. (3 points) What are the top three areas of community benefit provided by your chosen hospital? ââââââââââââââââââââShow both the percentages and dollar amounts (check the Community Benefit Expenditures table). 2. (2 points) How does the hospitalâs community benefit spending change over time since 2010? 3. (2 points) Is Medicare listed as a community benefit? If reported, what is the unreimbursed cost (or shortfall) of Medicare in this hospital? How does it compare to the top three areas of community benefit you have identified in Question 1? 4. (3 points) Have the hospital conducted a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) in the past three years? If so, what strategies did it adopt to address the community needs identified by the CHNA? (Many hospitals post their community reports on their websites. You may find information there.) 5. (5 points) Compare this hospital to another hospital of your choice. Click the green âCompare tax-exempt hospitalsâ button at the top right of the webpage ? Click the check boxes to add any selection filter. For example, âCity,â which limits your comparison hospitals in the same city ? Select a comparison hospital ? Click âCompare tax-exempt hospitals.â Adjust the year. What are the similarities and differences do you see in their community benefit spending areas? Deliverables: Write your answers to the above questions in a Word document. Include relevant data, table and graphs as supporting evidence. You may copy and paste the table and graphs found on the website or create your own based on the information you have collected (using Excel or Word to create tables and graphs).
