Assessment details For this assessment, you will need to select a current and urgent mental health issue as your focus. Your work needs to be written up as an essay, in which contemporary practice, research and theories are being reviewed and being applied to the current and urgent mental health issue. To help you understand what is meant by âcurrentâ and âurgentâ, the module team would like you to consider issues that are present and are likely to have been discussed and outlined in the mass media recently. Examples of current issues could include (but are not restricted to): ⢠The increase in male suicide. ⢠The challenge in delivering mental health services in a time of increased migration and the need for a multi-lingual, culture-sensitive approach. To help you understand how we define âcontemporaryâ, the module team has operationalised it as practice, research, or theories that have been present or published over the past five years. As this module is being taught in 2021-22, we will use the metric of 2016 onwards when referring to practice, research published, or theories generated. You are encouraged to draw from the ideas that have been covered in Blocks 1 and 2 of Term 1âs teaching. The structure of the essay should be as follows: 1) You need to identify the mental health issue and justify as to why it is deemed to be current and urgent. a. Please make it clear as part of your main title/subheading which teaching block(s) you are focusing on 2) You need to critique the key processes that are underpinning your chosen mental health issue and identify the processes that appear to be most important. 3) You need to discuss the potential interventions that could be used to address your chosen mental health issue. Assessment criteria Knowledge and understanding. ⢠Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of contemporary issues within mental health ⢠Evaluate and systematically assess competing explanatory theories related to specific psychological issues/topics ⢠Critically evaluate and engage in contemporary academic debates that underpin and synergise across specific psychological topics related to wellbeing and mental health Skills, qualities, and attributes. ⢠Demonstrate advanced written competency through communication of critical evaluations. ⢠Demonstrate independent thinking and critical evaluation skills ⢠Demonstrate effective use of a range of resources. You will be marked on the following areas: ⢠Quality and clarity of argument and expression (., this relates to the first section of the essay and your overall level of argumentation). ⢠Knowledge and understanding (., this relates to the second section of your essay in being able to dissect the key processes underpinning your chosen mental health issue). ⢠Ability to critique potential solutions (., this relates to the third section of your essay, which requires a discussion of possible ways to tackle your chosen mental health issue). ⢠Coverage and synthesis of material (., this relates to your ability to connect the essayâs contents to at least one of the taught Blocks from Term 1 teaching of this module). ⢠Organisation, structure and presentation (., this relates to the entire âpackageâ of how you have structured the essay, how it flows, and the level of care and professionalism that should be evident).
