As we continue to discuss your future EBP projects there continues to be an opportunity to ponder the patient care practices and processes that occur within our own work environments. Rauen, Flynn-Makic and Bridges (2009) opine that nursing practice remains linked with tradition despite the evolution of evidence-based practice. Many practices in nursing continue today despite reliable research to support or contradict ways, or traditions, that nurse’s practice. Nurses still report a lack of time, lack of resources and support as to why EBP is not implemented. Can you recall traditional practices in your work environment that may be not based on evidence-based practice but continue based on tradition? Is there evidence to support that these practices that are occurring may not be best practice? What are the barriers that you or your co-worker’s may encounter hindering the promotion and implementation of EBP? I have attached a couple of articles regarding traditions in nursing and EBP.
