Are not-for-profit hospitals doing enough to reduce the cost of health to the communities?
Studies have shown that patients delay care primarily based on cost concerns(Richard, Walker, & Alexandre, 2018). However, the not-for-profit hospitals are obligated by law to provide community benefits, including free and discounted care for eligible patients in place of paying federal and state taxes.
Studies show mixed results on whether these hospitals are doing enough to help improve access and reduce the cost to families and the community (Inniss, Tan, & Woodcock, 2016; Lamboy-Ruiz, Cannon, & Watanabe, 2017; Mose, 2021; Singh, Young, Daniel Lee, Song, & Alexander, 2015).
The North Carolina legislators are working on a bill to force the hospitals to make it easy for qualified patients to get free or discount care. First, in your opinion, do you think the cost is an issue in North Carolina? Second, after research on tax-exempt hospitals and community benefits, do you think these hospitals are doing enough? Lastly, do you think the provision of the proposed legislation goes far enough, or does it go too far? Why or why not?
