Applied Nursing Culture Assignment This assignment correlates with your Culture and Spirituality Lecture in Applied Nursing that is scheduled for Thursday February 24, 2022. It is designed to provide you an opportunity to do a little research on your own family’s cultural background. As a nursing student and future nurse, it is of great importance in the patient/nurse relationship that you understand your patients’ cultures. You will be assisting with the care of people of many origins and cultures, many much different from your own. To provide the best possible care to each individual patient, it is imperative that you recognize cultural differences that may enhance or negate the care you strive to give. In the past, I have learned about many new cultures through this assignment and even witnessed talents in my students I might never have known they possessed. We will spend the entire day beginning with our culture lecture, followed with each of you presenting a small history of your culture (5-10 minutes). What we ask is that you do a little research with your family and pick a recipe that has been handed down and prepared either on special occasions or maybe it is just a weekly favorite. Some examples in the past have been gumbo from the Cajun culture, pastries from the French culture, Mexican casseroles, Spanish dishes, Vietnamese dishes, Chinese eggrolls, etc. Once, on of our young male students was bewildered about what to bring. He was an only child and had never lived around extended family. He said he grew up eating McDonald’s French fries. So, he talked about those as his recipe. Each of us will share with the class a little family history. You can talk about the family member you interviewed or about how that family recipe became a favorite. During past presentations, we have had one student of Mexican culture perform a Mexican dance that she and her sisters performed at festivals. She was dressed in costume and entertained us. We have had students sing in their family’s native language, so give this assignment a little thought and use your imagination to teach us all something of your culture. Topics to Cover in your Presentation: Briefly describe the 9 points of your personal culture including: • Cultural background • Cultural background influenced by, • Memorable event in your family (traditions handed down). • Specific spiritual beliefs directly related to the culture, • Person with a strong influence upon your cultural beliefs and customs • Cultural beliefs and traditions related to death and dying, • How your culture views the elderly, • And what do you want us to understand about your people to treat them in a clinical setting (beliefs or spiritual influences on health status). • Bring a food that represents your culture, tell us about the dish brought and what it says about your culture. These points will need to be answered on paper as well to turn I was thinking about bringing cornbread as my dish. African American Culture, If you have any questions please call me 33-519-8931
