#1. Shoshanah original post: In my humble opinion, I do not believe that equating status with authority causes confusion. Status is a position that is accorded to someone by society based on many factors: Knowledge, experience, expertise, respect, power, and how the hierarchy has been set up. Status can give someone the authority to make decisions and have them implemented. Status and authority can work in tandem not in opposition. In relation to health care, a physician gains status based on their years of education and experience. They are trusted by society that allows them to have the authority to carry out their duties. Nurses may have a lesser status than doctors due to the way the hierarchy has been set up, but they do have status which gives them the authority to do their jobs. They reach that level of status because of their continued interest in furthering their education, doing research to explore evidence-based theories and practices that can be implemented. Nurses blend the art and science together which is giving the best patient care possible and incorporating what is the best course of treatment. “Nursing’s perspective is unique because of its blending of art and science—a blending of “caring” and “curing,” so to speak” Huston, 2017, p. 346). The status and authority between medical doctors and nurses should not cause confusion. Both have important parts to play in the health care field and should work together towards solutions. There is one common goal, the patient and community, and what is the best possible outcome for them. There needs to be unity and respect for each other’s contributions, their own respective status, and authority. The public trusts the physicians, but they also trust nurses. According to Huston (2017), nurses have a high degree of power since the public trusts them and believe them to be credible.

#2 Idalmi original post: The ability of a nurse to wield influence, mobilize resources, and empower patients is referred to as nursing power. This includes the ability to heal and the ability to sway others. The idea of expert power, which entails utilizing knowledge to influence others, expands on the latter. Professional authority has a unique function in the practice model since it is both an inherent part of and an effect of our work. It’s an internal result of successfully applying the other three practice model dimensions. We become more conscious of our practice knowledge as we execute them properly; we know what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and what we’re planning with patients to achieve. To be able to influence an individual or a group, you must have power. Nurses require authority in order to have an impact on patients, physicians, and other health-care professionals, as well as one another.
Equipping status with authority, in my opinion, does not produce misunderstanding, but rather confines them to the professional relationship. They are used to demonstrate respect in the same way as nurses and physicians do. This is due to the fact that the two areas are utilized to understand the professional connection. Because they are employed as a symbol of respect, equating status with authority should not be misleading. As a result, a nurse might be compared to a doctor in terms of the respect he receives.
