For each week that we cover a specific model of family therapy, students are to complete a 3-to-4-page paper (not including title or reference page) analyzing your family of origin on that specific model. This paper is to be exploration of your family of origin viewed through the theoretical lenses discussed in that day. In other words, this is more than the story of your family; rather it is an analysis of your family of origin. The purpose of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding and application of each family counseling theory. Use the sections below to organize your thoughts. Sections b and c should be the substance of your paper.

a. A section on the theory you are covering that week and brief synopsis of its conceptual lens. Cover key concepts, the role of the therapist, overview of treatment, etc. Please do not spend more than a paragraph at most covering this section as we will be go over it in class and familiar with it. You will be using citations from the book for this section.

b. A section on the analysis of your family using the language, assessment, and treatment of the theory we covered. Think of the historical and systems lens view of your family using the particular family therapy concept. Choose one problem and answer the following: What problem are you assessing? How would this theory describe the problem? Now, what techniques would the family use to treat the problem based on the theory you are discussing? Provide a treatment plan grounded in the theory. Again, citations should be used.

c. A section on how your family of origin (through the specific theoretical lens) has impacted who you are and how you relate to others today (family members, friends, colleagues, other students, professors, etc.). As you are using examples from the theoretical lens, you will need to cite from the text.

d. A section on how the above will influence you as a family counselor. What will you struggle with? What personality traits will be difficult for you? What do you need to be aware of in yourself? This should be about a paragraph.

It can be helpful in writing your papers, as well as enlightening, to interview family members about their experiences or beliefs regarding the above topics if you so choose. However, this is not necessary or mandatory.

Analysis of your family
<
The Fooks family is a large family with a recently passed patriarch and a still-living matriarch. The Fooks family is very close-knit, with deep love and care for one another. However, since the death of the patriarch in 2020, the underlying problems that festered within the family began to erupt in ways that disrupted that already fragile family system. This issue I would like to highlight in this family is lack of communication and members of the family being hesitant to share their feelings, leading to an eruption of conflict later. The Fooks family is very religious. About 8 of the family members are in ministry. This focus on ministry affected the younger members of the family who grew to resent the church and the institution of religion.

For example, the patriarch and matriarch Robert and Doris Fooks are church pastors. They had four children who were required to not only attend church four to five nights a week but were also required to work within the church. This led to rebellion and children being born out of wedlock. The pattern was repeated to their children. The children of Robert and Doris became ministers and worked at the church in adulthood. Their children were required to be in church four to five nights a week and weren’t allowed to do any activities outside of the church. Instead of the third generation of Fooks repeating this cycle, they rebelled against the institution of religion that stole their childhood. This caused the Patriarch and Matriarch and the second generation of parents to believe that the three generations of children and grandchildren were lost. The family remained close despite this. After the death of the patriarch in 2020, the family fell apart. All of the pain and resentment that festered came out. The second generation of parents that repeated the cycle to their children suddenly expressed pain and resentment towards their upbringing and the church.
