Every provider and institution need a specific number to practice in united states. This number is known as National Provider Identifiers or NPI. This number is used to improve the efficiency of EMAR. Additionally, Medicare and Medicaid use NPI to process the providers’ medical claims and financial transaction (NP lookup, 2022)
NPI number is 10-digit number which dose not show any other information about the providers such as the state they practice or their specialities. Under HIPPA regulations, it is required to share NPI number to health coverage plans or other providers for billing purpose (CMS.gov, 2022).
To obtain the NPI number, the applicant should fill out the CMS 10114 form online or fill it out from CMS. Org or mail physical copy to the office. Sometimes they send the application through Electronic File Interchange Organization (EFIO). During the process, the NPI office will verify the provider’s education and rights.
Whereas DEA number is issued by U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency for the providers to write any controlled prescription. Any providers who administer, dispense, or prescribe the controlled medications will need DEA number. This will allow the agency to track the number of prescriptions written for controlled substances. The agencies or pharmacies which are supplying controlled substances, the DEA number is also assigned to them to track the transactions. Scheduled II to IV drugs required DEA number to prescribed by the doctors. The agency annually updates the list of drugs covered by DEA (Meditac, 2019).
The providers can go to www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov. to apply for their DEA number. The providers will need their SSN, control number, DOB, and state. After 24 hr, the applicants can go back to site to check if their application was approved or denied. If the states required personal controlled substance permit, the applicants should obtain it first before applying for DEA (Comphealth.org, 2022).
