summary should be provided.
The purpose of the Project Summary/Abstract is to describe succinctly every major aspect of the proposed project. It should contain a statement of objectives and methods to be employed. Members of the review panel who are not primary reviewers may rely heavily on the abstract to understand your application. Consider the significance and innovation of the research proposed when preparing the Project Summary.
The Project Summary/Abstract must be no longer than 20 lines of text, and follow the required font and
margin specifications. This should include:
Brief background of the project;
Specific aims, objectives, or hypotheses;
Significance of the proposed research and relevance to public health;
Unique features and innovation of the project;
Methodology (action steps) to be used;
Expected results; and
Description of how your results will affect other research areas.
Specific Aims (0.5 – 1 page)
The purpose of the specific aims is to describe concisely and realistically the goals of the proposed
research and summarize the expected outcome(s), including the impact of the proposed research will exert on the research fields involved. This page should cover:
Broad, long-term goals;
Specific objectives and hypotheses to be tested;
Summarize expected outcomes; and
Describe impact on the research field.
Significance (approximately 1 page)
The Significance section should explain the importance of the problem or describe the critical barrier to
progress in the field that is being addressed. Explain how the proposed research project will improve
scientific knowledge, technical capability, and/or clinical practice in one or more broad fields. Describe
how the concepts, methods, technologies, treatments, services, or preventative interventions that drive this field will be changed if the proposed aims are achieved. This section should contain:
The state of existing knowledge, including literature citations and highlights of relevant data;
Rationale of the proposed research;
Research gaps/void that the project is intended to fill; and
Potential contribution of this research to the scientific field(s) and public health.
In this section, a review of existing research/literature (what is known and not known) on this topic
should be provided, possibly including review articles on the state of the knowledge regarding your
selected topic. If there are a lot of prior studies investigating various interventions for the selected
problem, your discussion will focus on the review of these studies*. On the other hand, if there has been
little prior research, you can review and discuss studies on factors related to your issue.
* Please do not write your literature review as an “annotated bibliography” (here’s article A, here’s article B). You are expected to write the literature review section as an integrated and organized review and synthesis of the literature, discussing previous studies that are similar in focus together within the same sub-section or paragraph.
Innovation (approximately 0.5 page)
Explain how the application challenges and seeks to shift current research or clinical practice paradigms.
Describe any novel theoretical concepts, approaches or methodologies, instrumentation or interventions to be developed or used, and any advantage over existing methodologies, instrumentation, or interventions. Explain any refinements, improvements, or new applications of theoretical concepts, approaches or methodologies, instrumentation, or interventions
