A nursing philosophy is a statement of your fundamental, foundational, and universal assumptions, beliefs, and principles about the nature of nursing. In lesson six you will write a paper about your own personal philosophy of nursing and compare your definitions with your selected nursing theory. For this lesson, you will begin to draw from your previous academic and work experiences to gather information and thoughts to get organized. As you do the reading for this lesson, keep in mind how the theorists you are reading about mirror your thoughts on nursing. The reading will help to guide the development of your personal philosophy.
Introduction: Set the stage to make the paper appealing and intriguing.
Definition of Human Being: This is your definition of what a human being is and how the human being is composed. Compare your definition to one nursing theoristâs definition and give examples.
Definition of Environment: This is your definition of what is meant by environment, both internal/external, in terms of the human being. Compare your definition to one nursing theoristâs definition and give examples.
Definition of Health: This is your definition of what is meant by health in terms of the human being. Remember, this is not asking for the definition of healthy, but what is health, good health, poor health, and where does death or absence of health fit in the schema. Compare your definition to one nursing theoristâs definition and give examples.
Definition of Nursing: This is your definition of nursing. This should be a broad, but thorough definition, not specific only to your practice area. Think about comprehensive, solid, evidence-based, patient-centered care. Compare your definition to one nursing theoristâs definition and give examples.
Develop your philosophyâs nursing metaparadigm by stating the relationship of each of the four concepts (human being, environment, health, and nursing) to each other and how one affects the other. Please feel free to add a section to this paper on caring if you would like as it has recently been added to this metaparadigm, this is optional for the paper but a common element in many philosophies.
Conclusion: Summarize the salient information from all the concepts above.
As you have seen above, you are to compare your personal thoughts with a nursing theory. A common question from students is, “Do I use one nursing theory or more than one?”. This will be unique to each of you. It may be that you fully embrace one particular nurse theoristâs theory, or it may be that your personal philosophy draws from more than one. I have attached a link below to a great website to get you thinking, but there are many sources on this topic. Remember this is your philosophy of nursing, it is not a paper on how to build one, it is not about philosophy, it is your personal philosophy. Include a correctly formatted title page and reference page so you can get specific feedback on your APA 7 formatting. For example, if using the nursing theory site as a source, you would cite the main page like this:
Petiprin, A. (2020). Nursing theories and a philosophy of nursing. http://nursing-theory.org/articles/nursing-theories-and-a-philosophy-of-nursing.php
When citing another page on that website which would be any theory that you are discussing, you would change the title of the webpage to the appropriate one (i.e. Madeleine Leininger- Nuring theorist. https://nursing-theory.org/nursing-theorists/Madeleine-Leininger.php)
Your outline must be clear as to how you will address each of the required topics above (your personal definition should be the standout piece of each section, as this paper is your personal philosophy). I would also like you to include the citations that will be used for each section, as well as a complete reference list. You will need at least 3 scholarly sources referenced for this paper. APA 7 formatting is something that is new to some of you and this will allow you to benefit from instructor feedback on the formatting.
Please click on the assignment heading above to open the assignment, click on the gray box “View Rubric”. This will tell you how you are being graded on this assignment. You will always want to look to the far right column in the rubric that is labeled “Proficient”. These are the criteria you must meet to earn full points on the assignment. Use the template provided for writing this outline (points will be deducted for not using the template). Review this the rubric again prior to submission to check for any last-minute revisions needed. This is also where you will submit your assignment when ready. You will need to save it to your computer as a document (.doc, .docx, or .pdf format) and then attach using the gray “browse my computer” button.
