For your book reviews, you should aim to provide a critical analysis of each book. This is not a
simple summary of a book. This should be a critical assessment, either of the book as a whole,
or you may choose to focus on just a section of the book. An excellent guide for writing a

The overall structure of the review is open, but a good book review will include the following:
• The context of the book – why does it matter? How does it relate to other books/current
events/discussions that exist right now?
• The purpose/main argument of the book – what is author trying to achieve?
• A brief summary of the book – this should take at maximum 2 pages.
• The type of evidence that the author relies on (and can be part of the summary) – is the
author relying on peer reviewed literature? Personal experience? Interviews? Blogs?
Newspaper articles? Etc. Is the evidence up to date?
• Most importantly, an evaluation of the book – this should address any or all of the points
above. Is this book relevant or important (context)? Did the author achieve their
purpose? Is the type of evidence used valid for their purpose? This should comprise the
bulk of your review.
Try to keep these different elements distinct in your writing, as they can sometimes be at odds
with each other. Example: a book aims to convince the reader of the benefits of stem cell
research. You think the author meets this purpose well, providing a wealth of data on the
benefits. But you also think that in today’s context, this book is irrelevant, since stem cells no
longer require destruction of an embryo and everyone is more or less on board with this research.
Outside Sources: You also need to do a bit of outside research for the reviews you write. Each
of your book reviews for this course should include 2-4 peer-reviewed sources
2.1 F ORMATTING R EQUIREMENTS FOR B OOK R EVIEWS
• 3-4 double‐spaced pages with 1-inch margins and in a standard 12‐point font.
• List only your name and a simple title (e.g., “Book Review: A Troublesome Inheritance”)
at the top of the first page. This should take up 2 lines, maximum.
• Include your Works Cited/Bibliography at the end. This will not contribute to your total
page count. See Guidelines for References later in this document for preferred
formatting.
• Quotes may be useful in writing a book review, but keep them to brief, especially
relevant passages that strongly support a specific point you aim to make. Use quotes
sparingly, or, even better, avoid them altogether
