Note: The main categories for a fishbone diagram may conform to standards (e.g., people, technology, etc.), but in public health, you can define these categories in a number of ways. For example, fishbone diagram categories may be tailored to a specific area related to the issue. In public health, this could be many thingsâsuch as listing social factors, behavioral factors, or even political climate. Sometimes the more defined the category, the more relevant this diagram may be to decision-making.

For the fishbone diagram, it is recommended that you create a free student account on LucidChart. Once you have a free account on LucidChart, start a new document. This will take you to the template gallery. In the template gallery, use “fishbone” as a search term. Select a basic fishbone diagram of your choosing.
Note: Alternatively, if you know how to use SmartArt in Microsoft PowerPoint, you may do so.

Part 1âThe Problem Statement: Identifying a public health issue
Visit a website that lists examples of evidence-based public health efforts (i.e., programs, interventions, etc.). Suggested websites include the following:

Database of Interventions Glossary
Find a specific (i.e., singular) public health effort on the website. In finding an example of a evidence-based public health effort, you may need to explore the website beyond the links provided. You can use the search bar in the upper right corner of the site to search for an intervention with certain characteristics.
After identifying a specific evidence-based public health effort, please review that program/intervention carefully.
Identify the public health issue the program/intervention has attempted to address.
Explain this public health issue within a single sentenceâcalled the problem statement. (Ideally, the problem statement should be less than 10 words.)
Part 2âThe Systems-Thinking Tool: Understanding “cause and effect” using a fishbone diagram
Using the problem statement from Part 1, build a fishbone diagram that describes the relationships between the problem (i.e., the effect) and systemic variables (i.e., the causes). You will refer to the intervention that you selectedâin addition to a review of the literatureâthroughout the completion of the fishbone diagram. Please attach a completed fishbone diagram of this public health issue as an “open source” file type (e.g., .pdf, .jpg, .png, etc.).
Part 3âNarrative Summary of Strategic-Thinking: Explaining your completed fishbone diagram
In 100â125 words, summarize the findings from your completed fishbone diagram.
