For our discussion this week, I would like each of you to explore your personal learning styles and share your perspectives. We all have individual preferences for how we learn most effectively and in a manner that will enable us to actually retain what we learned and apply the new knowledge/skills. VARK, which stands for Visual, Auditory, Read/write, and Kinesthetic, is an approach to understanding individual learning styles and preferences. Many of us have preferences that include a couple of learning styles and we often have a preference for learning one type of content a certain way (such as hands-on for learning a computer program) and another type of content in a different way (such as reading a textbook to learn theories and concepts). Understanding learning styles and preferences is critical for those of us involved in training and instruction so that we can reach each individual learner using the most effective method or combination of methods. Please go to the Vark Learning Style website https://vark-learn.com/the-vark-questionnaire/, and click on the link to the questionnaire. Complete the questionnaire online and review your results. (adapted from Noe, 2017) Answer he following questions in your discussion: Did your results indicate strong or mild learning preferences? Did you agree with the results – why or why not? Did you find the strategies that were provided with your learning preference(s) helpful? Can you see yourself applying them now as a graduate student? Can you see applying them in your work life? How would you apply this learning style preference model as a training and development professional? Overview and Objectives Overview and Objectives Students will be able to: Discuss the five types of learner outcomes. Explain the implications of learning theory for instructional design. Incorporate adult learning theory into the design of a training program. Describe how learners receive, process, store, retrieve, and act upon information. Discuss the internal conditions (within the learner) and external conditions (learning environment) necessary for the trainee to learn each type of capability. Discuss the implications of open and closed skills and near and far transfer for designing training programs. Explain the features of instruction and the work environment that are necessary for learning and transfer of training.
