Like several of you, the generational differences in the work place are what stood out to me the most. I’ve always noticed older generations being coworkers of mine, but I typically viewed them as a knowledge-base, or people who had more vacation time or a higher salary than myself rather than thinking about how they might perceive the job differently. A quote related to diversity from Scandura (2022) that stood out to me was “the leader must articulate a shared vision that all followers can embrace”. A leader must be able to identify the generational differences in order to come up with this vision that they can all relate to. This can certainly be a challenging task.
This new information is helpful in determining what an employee’s attitude might be towards their job or what might improve their overall attitude. Older generations are more prone to follow the rules of the organization and remain loyal; while younger generations are more motivated with rewards and praise, more willing to leave for another job if they feel it is a better fit for them or they will be better rewarded for their contributions (MerKaplan, 2014). When considering putting a team together, it is important to keep in mind that older generations prefer in person communication while younger generations might prefer to communicate via text, email, or calls over Zoom or Teams (Scandura, 2022). While all of this information can certainly be daunting, seeming like a jigsaw puzzle that must be assembled in order to achieve team cohesion; with practice and careful thought, the overall team dynamic can be furthered and improved upon greatly.
I am currently not in a managerial role where I can use this knowledge with much effect, but if I was leading a team I would take these differences into consideration when I set up small groups to work together on a task. I would also consider how I rewarded each person in order to provide them with the proper motivation.
