Research Topic: Understanding the Challenges of Reintegration in Veterans Post Deployment and How to Provide the Support That is Needed.
Purpose of the Proposal:
I am writing this proposal to highlight the challenges of reintegration that Veterans experience post deployment and the importance of the support systems that need to be in place to help them and their families adjust with little disruption to their lives and avoid extensive conflict in their marriages or family relationships.
Statement:
Transitioning from deployment environments to back at home and being expected to adjust from mission assignments to everyday life tasks and responsibilities can be an extremely challenging transition for any service member. This can be said for Active-Duty service members and National Guard members as well. This can be particularly challenging if they have families or partners and are trying to re-establish relationships with them again. However, with the right support, re-established relationships with family and spouses could be beneficial to service members by providing families with the tools to connect, understand each other and be patient and understanding of each other’s experiences during the transition. Families and spouses could become extra support for the service member if they’re able to access the resources that are needed to make the reintegration process less stressful.
There are added layers of challenges to the reintegration process when service members are diagnosed with PTSD or TBI or have other combat or deployment related injuries or illnesses. It should be noted that there could be differences in challenges between active duty and national guard members. Some service members could not want to seek professional help or feel stress or anxiety around seeking help for their mental or physical health concerns post deployment. This is another reason that having family and spousal support is so crucial during these times. Family members can help encourage service members to seek professional help for their injuries or illnesses and support them through treatments and therapies, which would help increase the outcomes and limit stressors and triggers that complicate the post deployment reintegration process.
Proposed Solution
Service members could struggle to seek professional help following deployments during the post integration transition due to concerns or fears of losing their status or reputation in the military. Aside from ensuring quality resources are provided, protocols need to be in place to provide assurances to service members that they are free to seek professional help for any degree of mental and physical health without fear of losing theluvir rank or status in the military.
