select a public health issue you are personally concerned about. The issue can be from the list above or from work, family, friends, or from your community. Once you have selected your issue, write your advocacy story for a popular media outlet. You should write this story with an acquaintance you are likely to know in ten years. It is hoped that this activity will spawn a discussion with the acquaintance which will spur you to follow up with advocacy for the issue in five to ten years. Your acquaintance can help you craft the story while you write it and add the supporting evidence.
Should be written at or below the 12th grade reading level and incorporate a story which personalizes the issue you are advocating for. The 1000 to 1200 word advocacy story should engage the reader, provide evidence from primary research, address ethical concerns, and suggest a policy-making process to address the issue. Start with your story by introducing the central character(s) and the issue. Then blend in the 9-points listed below to ensure you have discussed multiple dimensions of the policy-making process, including the roles of ethics and evidence.
The 9-points the initial post should identify the:
• Problem the evidence and policy are intended to address
• Purpose of the evidence and policy
• Population the evidence is drawn from and policy is created for
• Research methods used to generate the evidence
• Data collected and findings
• A policy recommendation which will address the issue introduced in the story
• Why the proposed policy will address the issue introduced in the story and research
• The ethical foundations on which the policy is based
• A proposal outlining the process of making the policy
The review of the research article should be incorporated into the flow of your story and utilize health literacy concepts. While carrying the story and the evidence through to the end, the initial post should suggest a change in policy which will address the issue you have chosen.
As a footnote of your initial post advocacy story, identify the acquaintance who contributed to your story and provide the literacy level statistics (reading level, average words per sentence, and average characters per word). In text citations and references at the end should be included in APA format.
Inclusion of primary research – this is a fundamental part of policies supported by evidence. The evidence should not only highlight the need of the policy, the evidence should also highlight the impact of the policy. Thus, include primary research in your initial post to get points (5-points each) for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th points of the “9-points” incorporated into the initial post.
Inclusion of ethical concerns – this is also a fundamental part of policy development. Initial posts should address why your proposed policy is ethical. Thus, indicate why your policy is ethical based on specific ethical standards and principles found in the reading to not get points (5-points each) for the 8th and 9th points of the “9-points” incorporated into the initial post.
Inclusion of a footnote identifying your acquaintance and the literacy level statistics – writing at a level so that people can access your content is critical when developing policy in the public arena. Thus, add a table indicating the reading level, average words per sentence, and average characters per word to attain 5-points.
