One of the course objectives is to assess theories from both nursing and related fields. You are asked to
examine two theories which are relevant to nursing practice (one from nursing, and one from related
fields). Your task is as follows:
1. Identify two theoretical perspectives that are relevant to your practice.
2. From that perspective – identify a specific theorist.
3. Read about each theory noting:
a. Major assumptions of the theory
b. The dynamic of the theory – i.e. how does this theory explain a phenomenon of health
or health care.
c. Discuss the potential impact on nursing practice that application of this theory might
generate.
d. Give examples related to health or health care of how the selected theory might be used
in practice.
4. While you may use some secondary resources as references, you must find at least one original
source that presents the tenets of your theory. Remember that some resources discussing the
selected theories may be greater than 5 years old.
5. Once you have completed your reading, prepare a presentation that covers all four points under
3.
6. It is anticipated that information sources will be documented and that reference guides will be
provided.
Creativity in presentation is important. Also use of resources will be important.
