e ethical cases will offer the students information about a potential ethical situation or dilemma a clinician/counselor might face. This will allow for the student to utilize critical thinking skills where they can evaluate how they would handle the case as a future clinician/counselor. After reading the ethical cases posted, the student is encouraged to share their thoughts and reactions to the ethical cases noted. Students should consider the following Questions to Ponder~ although all of these questions are not mandated to be part of your discussion answer or response:
What are the ethical implications or issues noted with this client case? So, there an ethical issue in the case?
If so, did the professional behave in a manner which is consistent with current standards and principles based on the readings?
If not, what other courses of action would be deemed more ethical practices? Thus, what is the basis for that conclusion?
If the professional fails to act responsibly and his or her misconduct is reported to a disciplinary body, what kind of action do you believe that body should that in this type of case?
If the professional behaved unethically but the conduct is never reported to any disciplinary body, what action(s) if any, do you believe should be taken to help undo the damage?
What should I do as a future clinician/counselor to make sure I maintain the appropriate code of ethics and boundaries where I do not violate these codes?
/counselor, what do I believe is the best solution for caring for, serving and advocating for the client?
It is understood that students are not professional clinicians/counselors – however, students in this course typically have strong critical thinking skills. Therefore, your post should exemplify your analytical thought process. Your post should be comprehensive with at least 2 paragraphs or (200 words at least). Please know there are no right or wrong responses in your discussion post. You are simply encouraged to share your thoughts openly and honestly while also again using a critical thought process.
CASE:
Brenda and Edward are referred for treatment as the result of an investigation of child abuse/neglect. The couple attends treatment with the goal of regaining custody of their sons, ages 1 and 4. They were found guilty of neglect and abuse when their younger child was found to have experienced three broken bones during his short life. Brenda and Edward, ages 22 and 23, and have dysfunctional family histories they do not wish to discuss. They acknowledge being overwhelmed by parenting and financial problems but insist that the injuries to their child were at least partly accidental. They have temporarily lost custody and have been mandated to counseling and parenting classes. Children’s Services has asked for access to counseling records, telephone contact with the therapist, and a role in the specification of treatment goals. The psychologist complies with this request.
As part of this process, students will be required to add

Brenda and Edward are under investigation with DSS/Children’s Services and are mandated to counseling and parenting classes. The therapist assigned as been asked for counseling records, telephone contact and treatment goals where the psychologist complies with these requests. While we, in this profession, are required to follow confidentiality and practice within the realm of ethics we need more information regarding this request in order to fully state if the psychologist acted ethically. For example, written authorization from the clients are needed in order to release any personal information. However, this case of Brenda and Edward is mandated so I would assume that while working with DSS/Children’s Services that the judge would have also issued a court order for these records in order to follow the case, making sure progress is being made so Brenda and Edward can be reunited with their children.
