Stage Model of Trauma Treatment
Judith Herman has been an influential writer and clinician in the field of trauma therapy. Her seminal work Trauma and Recovery laid the foundation for the three stage model of trauma treatment that other clinicians and researchers have modified, utilized, and adapted in the development of their own models. Herman (1997) stated “The core experiences of psychological trauma are disempowerment and disconnection from others” (p.134). She went on to point out that recovery is based on empowerment and the formation of connections and can only take place within the context of a healing relationship. Herman’s three stage model unfolds with (a) safety, (b) rememberance and mourning, and (c) reconnection with ordinary life.
For this module we will look at the first two stages of Herman’s model: safety and remembrance and mourning.
