Proverbs 14:30 talks about what a state of mind can do to one’s body. A mind that is at peace and tranquil gives life to the body, as in we are happy and healthy. Stress and sadness doesn’t only affect one’s mentality, it affects the body physically as well. Our immune system becomes weaker, and we are more prone to illness and disease. It can affect our cardiovascular system because stress raises our blood pressure and heart rate. This takes a toll on the heart and arteries. They eventually get worn out and stop working correctly. From a medical standpoint envy cannot rot the bones. In a spiritual point of view envy rots the bones in the sense that once envy gets in our body it penetrates to the deepest part, and it becomes harder to get rid of it. Our bone is deep within us. It is beneath the skin the fat and the muscles. So if we let envy in and let it grow in us, it gets into the very core; it becomes who we are. This verse used this metaphor to describe how envy can become a part of us if we let it in.
In Hebrews 4:12 Paul was using similes to describe how powerful the word of God is. It is “alive” and “active” because it becomes a reality in someone’s mind, body, and spirit. The word of God speaks to them through the words. The verse continues to say, “it penetrates even to divide souls and spirits, joints and marrow (NIV, 2011, Hebrews 4:12).” In other words, the bible can make anything possible. It penetrates so deep within our soul; it can change us. Envy, misery, and bitterness can penetrate us, but the word of God penetrates further. It gets deep within us and can change any bad habit or bad state of mind that we are in. A sinner can become a saint. There is no impossible when it comes to the things God can do through his word.
