ESSAY TITLE: “Please discuss how and why chronic stress undermines psychological health and wellbeing” • This is a classic academic essay where you are expected to summarise a topic and address a specific question or point of debate relating to the topic. • The content of the essays should be based on the lecture materials, essential reading and independent research as well. • Recommended structure (from school of psychology): • Introduction: o Introduce your topic, o State the aims / objectives of your paper – note that you can choose to focus on a small aspect of the topic, or remain with the wider topic. o If you are making an argument, you can state it’s key points here. o Articulate how the paper is structured or list the topics that will be covered in your paper. • Main body of the essay: o A summary of the topic you are covering, sequenced coherently across the sections. o Suggested sequence of sections: start by defining the concept, and summarising the theories that underlie the concept, you can then review measures (if relevant), and interventions (if relervant), ending with a review of relevant empirical research. o Consider offering definitions where required. o Explain acronyms where used but try to minimize their use. o Try to focus on a single topic in each section. o Importantly: keep your line of argumentation and reasoning coherent. Structure these sections so that they build a convincing argument. o Summarise and synthesise the literature that you draw on, rather than list them. o Where relevant: Offer the basics or historical starting point of your topic, but also provide an updated view of the topic based on the most recent literature. o Ensure that you capture debates that exist over the topic that you are covering. o Consider how to ensure the transitions between the sections work well and create good coherence and flow overall. • Conclusion, discussion and critique o Please conclude your paper, discus the concept and capture critique voiced by other authors and add your own critique. • Reference list o Please follow APA guidelines. o Not included in word count. I have included certain readings which you may use. One reading that must be cited is the book by Rona Hart, chapter 3 on wellbeing. Please use whichever readings you find which best fit this essay title. Martin Seligman is a major person in this topic so his articles may be especially useful.
