1. A woman was found strangled in her bedroom. There were wet towels strewn about, indicating that she had recently showered. A glove that looked like it belonged to a man lay on the bureau. Inside the glove, the police found some hairs that did not seem to belong to the victim. They also found blood on the glove’s surface. The victim was tied to the bed posts and her toe-nails had been ripped off prior to her strangulation.

2. It was a hot summer night. The screen to a basement window of a house had been removed. Inside, the police found a family of five suffocated to death. When a suspect was arrested, he admitted that he had met the family at a function of the elementary school his children and the dead children had attended. He said that he felt that the other children were trying to persuade his son and daughter to renounce their religion andconvert to atheism. To protect his children’s religious upbringing, the suspect said he felt he had to put the other family out of its misery (i.e., the misery he attributed to being Godless atheists).

3. A police officer was called to a small apartment building after neighbors noticed that the woman in Apartment 6B had not been seen for days. On entering the apartment, the officer noticed a set of handcuffs and a whip, but the apartment appeared otherwise unremarkable. There was no evidence of struggle, and everything appeared to be in its place, but the woman remained missing. Several weeks later, a high school student taking a shortcut through the rear parking lot of a shopping center noticed a foot sticking out of the shrubbery. He called the police, and the dead woman was soon identified as the woman from 6B.

4. A man was found stabbed to death in an alley next to a popular bar. He was wearing a tie-dyed shirt, was scruffy looking, and had long hair. The victim’s hands were bound with rope, and the presumed weapon, a handgun, was lying in a pool of blood on the victim’s right side. No one who knew Rob Torres, the victim, could understand what had happened; he had seemed such a peaceful soul. A week later, a similar-looking man, similarly attired, was found dead behind a local movie theater. A suspect was questioned, and he admitted that he had been instructed by an angel to kill all hippies because they threatened the traditional family structure.
